Description

The Mt. Zion Baptist Church was founded in 1888 in Connersville, Indiana. This short history covers the first 77 years of the church. All of the former pastors are named.

The publication includes photographs of a number of the church members at the time the history was written in 1965, as well as many of their names.

Many parishioners have descended from Boone County, Kentucky enslaved families. Descendents migrated from Boone County across the Ohio River into Indiana at the end of the nineteenth century.

In 1904 Rev. W. M. Winfrey was called. The church had at that time 25 members. During his years of service, the parsonage was built, a furnace was installed in the church, and the two annexes, the missionary room and pastor's study were added. His first convert was Mrs. Viola Huey Rhinehart. In 1905 Rev. Winfrey baptized 42 converts in the canal on Western Avenue. In 1912, he left to go to the Second Baptist Church in New Albany. When he left the membership had increased to three hundred.

On the first Friday in October 1964, Rev. Davison accepted the call to come to Mt. Zion.

Since he came he has inspired the members to such an extent that finances have improved very much, the indebtedness on the new piano was paid off. There have been sixteen members added to the roll. He has lifted the church out of a rut and started a spiritual movement that is progressing immeasurably. He has put every organization to work and reorganized the B. T. U. There are plans in the making for a new Church, now a dream, but if God wills, in the near future, an actuality.

Rev. Davison is off to a good start. It remains to be seen what his footprints on the sands of time will show.
